Soon after joining the Los Angeles Lakers, NBA veteran guard and current New Orleans Hornets Head Coach Byron Scott established the Byron Scott Children's Fund in order to "give back to his community."

Founded in 1984, Challenge for Children had a goal to help the sick and underprivileged children of Orange County. The mission of the Byron Scott Children's Fund is to benefit California children who have medical, educational or emotional problems, as well as to serve as consultants to start-up or small non-profit charitable organizations who do not have the experience to survive without financial or administrative assistance.

Byron's fund-raising events featured celebrities and professional athletes competing to benefit children in need. Through special events such as golf, tennis and basketball tournaments and the Challenge for Children Black Tie and Tennis Shoe Dinner and Auction, over the last decade alone, Challenge for Children has raised more than $2.2 million for Children's charities throughout Southern California.
